Tour groups leave for Bangkok despite red travel alert

Taipei, April 12 (CNA) Several tour groups left for Bangkok Monday, despite a red travel alert for the Thai capital issued a day earlier by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

The MOFA raised its travel alert from orange to red -- the highest level on its four-tier travel advisory alert system -- as clashes between Thai anti-government protesters and security forces intensified.

Taiwanese tourists were asked to sign responsibility waivers before traveling to the city and the members of one tour group were asked to sign a hastily scrawled agreement at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport shortly before boarding their flight, which raised questions about the validity of the agreement, although all agreed to sign.

Some of the travelers said they were going to Pattaya, not Bangkok, and that they would avoid areas where the bloody clashes were taking place, adding that they were not terribly worried about their safety.

Among other passengers bound for Bangkok, some said they were returning to Bangkok for work, while others said they were going home. All of them noted that they decided to go ahead with their travel plans after making inquiries about the situation there.

Meanwhile, those who arrived in Taiwan after transiting through Bangkok airport said they were not worried about their safety because the situation at the airport was not serious. (By Beien Chin-feng and Y.L. Kao) ENDITEM/J
