Floating Market

More than 40 years ago, when I first visited Bangkok, one of the most impressive tourist attraction for me is the floating market. At that time, Bangkok's floating market is located at around Wat Arun. Hundreds of traders selling wares from small boats that rowed quietly milled around the area. This was indeed the market to meet the everyday needs of local residents.

Unfortunately, year after year, once famous floating market in Bangkok this decreases its quality as a tourist attraction. About ten years ago, when I "persuaded" by the water taxi driver to visit the floating market, I was ushered into a traditional market near Wat Sai, Bangkok. Indeed, there is a land market is quite crowded. However, operating to sell merchandise from a small boat on the Chao Phraya river's child could be counted on fingers. sales was not impressive.

There is a middle-aged women boating with cooler-boxes continue to woo tourists to buy beer persuasion. There is another boat that offers some postcards and souvenir items. Too little boat dealers, instead we should chase boat which is expected to function as a sailing shop.

Since the last decade, Thailand's tourism managers have to "create" floating market at Damnoen Saduak new - about an hour drive to the west of Bangkok. Very large scale, thereby becoming a tourist attraction that was impressive. In addition, the organizers of this floating market it worked really operate as a real market which is indeed a place of daily transactions for the citizens who live in the vicinity.

Every day, dozens of tourist buses come to the Damnoen Saduak bring thousands of tourists. They then climbed a small canoes and down the river with canoes full of traders. Most of the traders at the floating market selling food ingredients to be cooked at home. However, some boats also sell food to be enjoyed on the spot. Along the river there are many shops and found the shops with a variety of merchandise.

In this market, the local residents everyday shopping needs, while the tourists shopping for souvenir items and breakfast foods, beverages sold there. Even those who had breakfast at the hotel was definitely tempted to snack again there. Seller noodle soup, pad thai (fried noodles), fruit pieces, fried bananas, and various refreshments are served attractively.

I had a chance to taste the delicious duck noodles, from a canoe tethered. Apparently, for duck noodle is very famous, he did not have time to paddle the boat back and forth. Other canoes lined up to buy the duck noodles. The good, to overcome the bottlenecks, tourist boats should not be "parked". Then, how to restore the noodle bowl? Easy! Waterman will return it when through that place again.

Indeed, an attraction which is very interesting and interactive with the local population.

Rose garden

Damnoen Saduak Because some distance outside of Bangkok, the other a tourism object also created to "capture" of tourists who visit Bangkok this western region. This place is known by the name of the Rose Garden. Originally this place is organizing a conference venue of international orchid.

Rose Garden was built with the concept of a garden of beautiful flowers, so it can become an attractive haven. Here too there is hotel facilities, places to eat such a food court that can accommodate several tourist buses at the same time, as well as fine dining restaurants are pretty good.

But the main attraction of the Rose Garden is not a flower garden. In the middle of this region built a platform that can accommodate about a thousand guests. Stage itself is very broad, a replica of a village center. At this stage demonstrated the everyday life of the Thai people in a compelling choreography. Beginning with the villagers procession - complete with a few elephants that was always a part of this process - which is being proposed to attend the wedding.

Later, the marriage ceremony was held, complete with a variety of dances. Attractions in the Rose Garden appearances this reminds me of a similar attraction at Saung Angklung Mang Ujo, on the outskirts of the city of Bandung. In my opinion, Mang Ujo also manages to present a good and natural choreography to show the life of our society.

Phra Pathom Chedi

Besides the Rose Garden, another tourist attraction on the west of Bangkok Phra Pathom Chedi is - the highest temple in the world. 127-meter-high main stupa. This temple is located in the small town of Nakhon Pathom. Unfortunately, not enough Phra Pathom popular than other Thai tourist attractions.

In the Mekong River Delta, on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), there is also a tourist attraction is the river that might get inspiration from the success of Thailand Damnoen Saduak floating market conduct this. However, they cleverly change the attraction to keep 100 percent of cheating.

In this Mekong River Delta, tourists are invited up small canoes dikayuh by the mothers down the creek on the sidelines of sago palm forest, to a small village community life of the dragon fruit plantation. Here, the tourists were treated with various types of fruit typical of Vietnam, as well as see a variety show about the arts village.

After enjoying the atmosphere of orchards in the village, tourists are guided carriage rides to another village. In the village, tourists see a cottage industry of traditional crafts made by the public. There dodol-making demonstrations, and various local snacks.

Such packaging is very interesting, because it only takes a few hours only tourists can absorb a way of life and local culture.

Banjarmasin

We actually also has a floating market in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, which we never boast. Unfortunately, the only floating market in Indonesia is now increasingly in danger of extinction. Supermarket shopping is a place for modern society. Who wants to shop with down to the river?

Well, not in RCTI we still often see a video clip about the beauty that the floating market? Apparently, according to information I received, when done shooting, RCTI (or any production companies that make these video clips) should bring in truckloads of fruits and vegetables, as well as mobilizing tens of canoe. In other words, a scene that we see on the screen RCTI was a "stage" which laid out spectacularly.

In fact, when last visited there years ago, have fewer and fewer traders who sell at the floating market of Banjarmasin this. There are only a few canoes containing bananas, oranges, coconuts, cassava leaves - it was not full - since the dawn passing around at the market. The buyer is not how much. Tourists who come even then only a handful.

Admittedly, the presence of a floating market as daily necessities are on the wane. But, if done redefinition - for example by making it as a floating market which is only open on weekends - maybe once we can revive the floating markets like this. Not only in Banjarmasin, but also in several cities that have rivers.

I often imagine the presence of sections of the river in Jakarta - perhaps in the Istiqlal Mosque, seruas Latuharhary Road, or along Jalan Gajah Mada, who was named Molenvliet - well laid out and made a tourist area of the river, then the citizens will be benefited by the presence of cheap fun recreation . Of course not easy. But, I do not believe that our nation do not have sons who are able to accept this challenge
